The redshirt protestors demanded that Abhisit dissolve parliament and call an early election. The current government came to power via a coup backed by the military.

The standoff deteriorated into street clashes across the city resulting in 90 deaths and more that a thousand injuries. This included the deaths of two foreign journalists.
